Within-host bacterial growth dynamics with both mutation and horizontal gene transfer

چکیده

The evolution and emergence of antibiotic resistance is a major public health concern. understanding the within-host microbial dynamics combining mutational processes, horizontal gene transfer resource consumption, one keys to solving this problem. We analyze generic model rigorously describe interactions four bacterial strains: fully sensitive drug, with only, plasmidic both resistances. By defining thresholds numbers (i.e. each strain’s effective reproduction transition threshold numbers), we first express conditions for existence non-trivial stationary states. find that these mainly depend on bacteria quantitative traits such as nutrient consumption ability, growth conversion factor, death rate, mutation (forward or reverse), segregational loss plasmid probabilities (for plasmid-bearing strains). Next, concerning order in set numbers, show qualitative range from extinction all strains, coexistence strains at equilibrium. Finally, go through some applications our general analysis depending whether interact without drug action (either cytostatic cytotoxic).

Opportunity and Means: Horizontal Gene Transfer from the Human Host to a Bacterial Pathogen

The acquisition and incorporation of genetic material between nonmating species, or horizontal gene transfer (HGT), has been frequently described for phylogenetically related organisms, but far less evidence exists for HGT between highly divergent organisms. Here we report the identification and characterization of a horizontally transferred fragment of the human long interspersed nuclear eleme...

Horizontal gene transfer depends on gene content of the host

Horizontal gene transfer is a major contributor to the evolution of bacterial genomes. We examine this process through a combination of comparative genomics and in silico analysis of the Escherichia coli metabolic network. We validate our horizontal transfer estimates by confirming the predicted gradual amelioration of GC content over time. We find that the chance of acquiring a gene by horizon...

Horizontal Gene Transfer and The Evolution of Bacterial Cooperation

Bacteria frequently exhibit cooperative behaviors but cooperative strains are vulnerable to invasion by cheater strains that reap the benefits of cooperation but do not perform the cooperative behavior themselves. Bacterial genomes often contain mobile genetic elements such as plasmids. When a gene for cooperative behavior exists on a plasmid, cheaters can be forced to cooperate by infection wi...

Genomic islands: tools of bacterial horizontal gene transfer and evolution

Bacterial genomes evolve through mutations, rearrangements or horizontal gene transfer. Besides the core genes encoding essential metabolic functions, bacterial genomes also harbour a number of accessory genes acquired by horizontal gene transfer that might be beneficial under certain environmental conditions. The horizontal gene transfer contributes to the diversification and adaptation of mic...

Genome of a tardigrade: Horizontal gene transfer or bacterial contamination?

We have read the article “Evidence for extensive horizontal gene transfer from the draft genome of a tardigrade” (1) with interest and were astonished by the high number of genes horizontally transferred into the tardigrade genome. Still, we were surprised by the reported genome size of>200Mbp, which is in stark contrast to a previously published size of ∼78 Mbp determined by the same group (2)...
